Google has introduced a new feature that simplifies the process of installing custom apps on Android devices. The update, announced this week, allows users to create apps in Google AI Studio and install them directly on their devices without publishing them to the Play Store or dealing with sideloaded files.

The feature, called the “personal app route,” enables users to build apps using written prompts to Gemini, Google’s AI model. They can refine the app with additional prompts or by editing the code. Once completed, the app can be sent to Google Play and installed using a regular Google account, eliminating the need for a paid developer account or APK file downloads.

A Private Library for Personal Apps

Installed apps appear in a new “personal library” section of the Play Store on the user’s devices, including tablets and computers with access to Play. These apps are not visible in search or on listing pages and are private by default. This approach addresses the previous challenges of publishing personal apps, which often required exposing them to the Play Store’s vast user base or managing the complexities of sideloading.

The feature is initially available in the US for users aged 18 and up, with a few other markets also gaining access. Apps created through this route must still comply with Google Play’s existing policies, but they are not reviewed by Google unless the user decides to make them public.

Google Enhances Play Store with AI and Gaming Features

In addition to the personal app route, Google is enhancing the Play Store’s AI capabilities. Ask Play, the store’s AI assistant, is being expanded from a small chatbot on app listings to a general search tool. It can now generate recommendations and comparison charts to help users find the right apps.

Google’s AI model, Gemini, is also receiving an upgrade, allowing it to provide direct links to Play Store apps within chats. This integration aims to streamline the app discovery process for users.

The company is introducing Game Finder, a recommendation system tailored for Android gamers. It creates a “Gamer DNA” profile based on user preferences, allowing for more personalized game suggestions. The system includes playlists and plans to offer more granular filters in the future.

Google is also rolling out several gaming-related features, such as Sprints, Community Posts, and enhanced Quests. Sprints are 48-hour challenges that match players with similar skill levels to compete for top scores. Community Posts add a Q&A section to store pages, allowing players to ask and answer questions about games. Quests now enable developers to reward players with in-game items in addition to Play Points.

The Sidekick overlay can record 30-second gameplay clips, and users can create their own game lists to recommend to others. These features aim to make gaming on Android more interactive and engaging.

The Play Store’s sports topic pages are being updated to cover soccer games from the Premier League, offering users timely content during live matches. The store’s layout is being optimized for cars with Google built-in and Android XR devices, ensuring a better user experience across different platforms.

Another notable addition is the age-range feature, which allows parents to share their child’s age range with developers without revealing an exact birthdate. This enables apps to adjust their content and functionality to be more suitable for younger users.

Personal App Route: A New Era for Android App Development

The personal app route represents a significant shift in how users can create and distribute apps on Android. By simplifying the process and maintaining privacy, Google is making it easier for individuals to develop and use custom apps tailored to their specific needs.

Sharing personal apps with a small group of friends and family is planned for the coming months, though Google has not specified the size of these groups. If an app gains popularity, users can transition to a professional developer profile, subjecting the app to the same trust and safety reviews as other Play Store apps.

The Sidekick overlay’s 30-second gameplay clip recording feature enhances the social aspect of gaming, allowing users to easily share their experiences. This addition complements the other gaming features, providing a rich gaming environment on Android devices.

AI-Powered App Discovery and Personalized Gaming Experiences

Gemini’s direct links to Play Store apps within chats further streamline app discovery.

The Game Finder system, built on data from 1.2 billion Android gamers, creates personalized game suggestions. It includes playlists and plans for more granular filters, though the full extent of these features at launch remains unclear.

Upcoming Sharing and Migration Options

The exact size of these groups remains unspecified, and no developer account will be required for this limited sharing. After sharing, apps can undergo the standard trust and safety review process if users choose to make them public.

This feature helps apps tailor their content and functionality to better suit younger users.
