Microsoft Edge Drops Support for Ad Blockers

Microsoft Edge users will soon find that some older extensions, like uBlock Origin, no longer work due to the browser’s transition to the Manifest V3 extensions platform.
This change follows Google Chrome’s lead and disables MV2 add-ons in the process. Edge is built on Google’s Chromium engine, so the change isn’t unexpected, but it does impact users who rely on older ad blockers. The underlying architecture of the Chromium engine is a key factor in this transition, as it provides the foundation for the browser’s functionality and determines the compatibility of extensions.
Microsoft recently announced that it will begin turning MV2 extensions off by default over the next few months, and support for these add-ons will end completely for most users by the close of 2026. The transition for enterprise is expected to be finalized in early 2027. Microsoft notes that 95% of MV2 extensions on Edge have already moved to MV3, leaving fewer than 60 in the Edge Add-on store still on MV2.
The transition to MV3 is driven by the need for improved security, performance, and functionality. The new platform provides a more robust and efficient framework for extensions, enabling developers to create more powerful and feature-rich add-ons. However, this transition also means that some older extensions, like uBlock Origin, will no longer be compatible with the browser.
uBlock Origin is among the affected extensions, but it has an MV3 version in uBlock Origin Lite. However, the latter isn’t as powerful as its predecessor and hides content rather than keeping it from loading in the first place. This limitation is due to the restrictions imposed by the MV3 platform, which affects the way ad blockers filter content. As a result, users may need to adjust their expectations and explore alternative ad blockers that are compatible with the new platform.
They offer alternative ad blockers, such as AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, and AdGuard, which have Edge versions. These alternatives are not perfect replacements for uBlock Origin due to restrictions on how MV3 ad blockers filter content. The filtering capabilities of MV3 ad blockers are more limited compared to their MV2 counterparts, which may impact their effectiveness in blocking certain types of ads or content.
For users who want to retain the ad-blocking features they’re used to, switching to other browsers with ad-blocking capabilities is an option. The shift away from older ad blockers may prompt users to reconsider their browser choices and explore alternatives that prioritize user control and transparency. This decision may also depend on individual preferences and needs, as different browsers offer varying levels of ad-blocking functionality and customization options.
One such alternative is Firefox, which runs on its own Gecko engine and still allows these older ad-block extensions, including new features in other contexts, but here it means uBlock Origin can still be used. Firefox’s independence from the Chromium engine means that it is not affected by the same transition to MV3, providing users with a viable option for continued use of older ad blockers.
DuckDuckGo and Brave both have built-in ad-blocking capabilities, providing users with more options for online privacy and security. These browsers prioritize user control and transparency, offering features that go beyond basic ad blocking, such as tracker blocking and privacy protection. As users explore alternative browsers, they may find that these options better align with their needs and preferences.
Microsoft’s decision to end support for older Edge extensions is a significant change for users who rely on these add-ons. The company’s commitment to the MV3 platform reflects its focus on security, performance, and functionality, but it also means that users must adapt to the new setting of browser extensions. As the transition to MV3 continues, users will need to evaluate their options and choose the browser and extensions that best meet their needs.
The impact of this transition extends beyond individual users, as it also affects the broader ecosystem of browser extensions. Developers must now prioritize compatibility with the MV3 platform, which may require significant updates to their existing extensions. This shift may lead to a more streamlined and efficient ecosystem, but it also presents challenges for developers and users alike.
