AI fuels expertise crisis

The rise of generative AI is not only reshaping societal trends but also challenging traditional power trends, particularly in the area of professional advice. A full poll conducted by Use.AI, involving 15,428 respondents, sheds light on this shift. The findings reveal that 53% of participants now verify the advice of professionals, such as doctors, using AI tools before making key decisions. This figure is a significant indicator of the growing influence of AI on individual decision-making processes.

Moreover, 46% of the respondents reported that professional credentials hold less weight today due to AI’s capability to independently investigate complex claims. This shift, dubbed an “expertise recession” by Use.AI, highlights a significant trend where people are less inclined to accept professional advice at face value, instead choosing to cross-check it with AI-driven information.

AI’s Impact on Expertise: A Double-Edged Sword

AI has empowered individuals to question and challenge experts, supporting a more interactive dynamic between professionals and their clients. However, this newfound empowerment also presents risks. AI tools may lack the full medical history, contextual knowledge, or human intuition that a doctor possesses, potentially leading to misdiagnoses or dangerous advice.

For instance, a man in the UK developed bromism, a rare psychiatric disorder, after following ChatGPT’s suggestion to replace dietary salt with sodium bromide, highlighting the potential dangers of relying solely on AI advice. Similarly, a lawsuit alleges that a chatbot’s recommendation led to a teenager’s fatal drug overdose, showing the severe consequences that can arise from misguided AI-generated advice. Even Google’s AI health summaries, despite their advanced algorithms, have been found to rely heavily on YouTube for information, which may not always be reliable or accurate.

The Age Divide in Questioning Professionals: A Generational Gap

The poll also uncovered a clear age gap in attitudes towards questioning professional advice. Among adults aged 18 to 34, a staggering 70% feel more comfortable challenging professional advice due to AI, compared to just 49% of those aged 45 and over. This disparity reflects the digital divide, with younger generations, often more tech-savvy and exposed to AI-driven tools from an early age, being more likely to adopt and trust AI-generated information.

However, it’s key to note that while AI can democratize access to information and support better questions, it does not necessarily equip individuals with the tools to judge the accuracy of the answers. As Ihor Herasymov, co-founder and CEO of Use.AI,puts it, “AI has democratised confidence faster than it has democratized knowledge.” This means that while AI can help individuals ask better questions, it may not necessarily equip them to assess the validity of the answers accurately.

For example, a study found that even a tiny amount of false medical information in training data could significantly increase incorrect answers generated by AI. This shows the need for individuals to exercise caution when relying on AI-generated information, especially in critical areas such as healthcare.

In conclusion, the rise of AI in querying professional advice presents a complex setting of opportunities and challenges. As AI continues to evolve and integrate into our daily lives, striking a balance between empowering individuals and ensuring they have the tools to interpret AI-driven information accurately will be key. This will require ongoing efforts to educate the public, refine AI algorithms, and support a culture of informed skepticism towards AI-generated advice.
